Gratitude: Fall is Coming

Gratitude: Fall is Coming

What I’m Grateful For: Fall is Coming

Each season holds its own particular joys, but after the last half-decade of continual summer wildfires, I find myself longing for fall more and more each day. The unbelievably deep blue skies, the crisp mornings and the welcome warmth of sunlight, the leaves turning and the chilly nights…. sweaters and boots and cozy blankets…. Oh hurray it’s coming soon! I really cannot wait, I’m so ready for the smoke to clear and the nearly-constant fear of fire to ease. And sweaters. I’m so ready to wear my warm, cozy sweaters!

What I’m Reading: Smarter Faster Better: The Transformative Power of Real Productivity by Charles Duhigg.

This week I’m reading about SMART goals versus “stretch” goals. A SMART goal (made famous by GE and many others that followed) is Specific, Measurable, Achievalbe, Realistic and has a Timeline. And people really love SMART goals – in fact, it seems that they can love them so much, they forget about the big, important goals with the emotional and psychological rewards that come from “checking things off the list” of SMART goals. So researchers landed on the idea of adding a ‘stretch’ goal into the mix- one that is SO big that you don’t know how to get there. They found that by adding in an audacious goal that’s a little too big to know how to get to, people really dig into things with creativity and vigor, and they often create radically innovative solutions to achieve those crazy goals! What about you? What kind of goals do you set? How do you make them happen?
